Working while drawing your pension (combining)
Can you continue or resume an activity while receiving a Luxembourg pension? It depends on your age and the type of pension.
After 65: unrestricted combining
From the statutory age of 65 ans, you may carry on an activity (employed or self-employed) WITHOUT any limit on income or hours — your old-age pension is not reduced. The earnings remain subject to social contributions.
Early pension (57/60): anti-combining rules
With an EARLY old-age pension, combining is restricted (art. 226 CSS). As long as the professional income remains "insignificant" — below one third of the minimum social wage per month — the pension is paid in full. Beyond that, it is reduced by the portion which, added to the income, exceeds an individual ceiling (the average of your five highest career earnings); if the income alone exceeds that ceiling, the early pension is suspended.
Invalidity pension: a strict threshold
The invalidity pension requires giving up any activity other than "insignificant" ones (income ≤ one third of the minimum social wage per month). Beyond that, the pension is withdrawn and the state of invalidity may be re-examined (art. 187 CSS). Any resumption of activity must be declared to the CNAP.
Good to know
The thresholds (one third of the minimum social wage, the ceiling of the five highest earnings) are indexed and individual: they evolve with the cost of living and your career. Since a ruling of the Constitutional Court in 2024 (corrected by the law of 19 décembre 2025), employees and the self-employed follow the same rules of graduated reduction. Only the CNAP rules on your situation.
